Politics (not talking about political parties cause that an entirely separate blog. Let's start at our home church.) are everywhere and it bothers me when it's within the church. Certain members seem to be in the "in" crowd while others are not. That has no place in church, but sadly it's there ... even at FFBC .. and I don't like it.

I always enter into new adventures with my eyes wide open and my mouth shut (for the most part). I think if more of us practiced that, we would be much better witnesses for Christ.

I believe that all worshippers have relevancy when it comes to praising and serving God. What someone looks like has nothing to do with AND shouldn't have anything to do with serve to the Almighty.

I think that is one of the most difficult areas for the church today because of instrumentation and technical aspects of worship. I am one who believes that if God can lead on the spur of the moment, He can lead me in planning. I have noticed through the years that the "movement of the Holy Spirit" at times gets blamed for the leader's lack of planning (shame on us)! But, there are true movements of the Spirit that we cannot plan for. When these happen, we have to be patient and trust our team to flow with us. Fortunately, if you have been working with a team for a long period of time I believe that He will direct them just as He does the leader.

As a church technical guy I understand the timing of the service, how do you remain authentic to the leading of the Holy Spirit when it takes you off script and throws the service plan off?

As a professional audio video and lighting guy, I certainly believe I have been given a talent and gift to enhance worship services and impact the kingdom through that.
Thank you for your exortation to include the techies as a part of the team.
My audio mix has as much spirit leading as the person who expresses themselves through guitar or singing. Unfortunately it is not typically seen that way. It's only seen as volume control, or lack there of.

I would say that worship is brought about and caused by the Gospel. Our theology propels our doxology, and a correct understanding of God's character and the Gospel will lead to edifying corporate worship.

Corporate worship, I believe, has two purposes (Col 3:16-17) - to ascribe praise and glory to God and also to preach the Gospel to one another.

I like to think of it this way (and this is not a new thought by any means): A church service is essentially a rehearsal of the Gospel. Does our understanding of the Gospel affect the songs that we choose? Absolutely. Even if we don't realize it, our songs reflect our theology, so it's important that our songs reflect a correct theology and Gospel - if that makes sense. :)

I think it's important to remember that our worship has a purpose in the service, which is to rehearse the gospel.

Matt Boswell is an excellent songwriter who's written some very theologically sound and congregationally helpful modern hymns. Matt Papa and Kauflin wlso have excellent songwriting skills.

Agreed. Love the Colossians reference, and I think the key just might be in that first phrase: "Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you..."

I am privileged to conduct the Tennessee Mens Chorale - worship music ministers from Baptist churches across our state. We leave Saturday to spend a week in Montana sharing mission and minsitry at their state convention of Baptists as well as singing for a school and some area churches in Billings and Helena. So glad I checked out your website. Keep writing important thoughts regarding worship leadership.

It would be helpful to have the music with the words, since many people in the congregation do not know all the songs. It's easier to worship when people can be active participants.
The church can move forward when we realize that all participants can contribute to God's work.
